Default Iron man movie armor material

Hi~ I would like to ask how can I make the metal material of iron man armor in the movie with Maya Mia material? I have used mi car paint shader but it cost much time and mia material seems a better solution coz it take less time than mi car paint shader.

As my observation, the armor is like quite high reflection with color of environment but blurred, and the edge of the metal reflection is high, how can I achieve a material shader as same as the armor in the movie with mia material? If mia material is not possible to make does other shader can make a similar shader with the armor material? Thanks for any reply

Fxguide.com has a good podcast with Ben Snow from ILM on how they went about creating the material. the suit was done with renderman with over 5000 lines on code in the shader. From what I can gather one of the big things in this shader its it uses 3 different layers of specular.

Well, this shot is the practical suit (with a few CG tweaks, like the glows), so it'll be a tough match.

I did some experiments myself with mia_material and carpaint to make "teapot man":

My best tip is to do the metal thing on my blog as a base, and blend it with a clearcoat-ish layer, probably with some car pain flakes, if you want to. Layering is the key for this.

And it being glossy, the render times will be high - the only "quick fix" is to take the help of mia_envblur for environment reflections.

That's really great !

I think flakes are a bit strong on your tests, but that's certainly a personal taste point.

Could you please explain a way to "layer" a shader with max ? I would be very interested to know how add several reflections layers on the same shader.

I use this topic to ask for an other question, about the mia_envblur shader. After reading your article on your great blog, I tried it on a scene (always with 3dsmax), but I'm not sure to have understood its use.
I first set an HDRI environment, was happy with it. Then I replace this HDR by the mia_envblur in the Environment map slot, and use the HDR as sub-material. It works but the renders became darker.
Does the whole exposure need to be re-worked or do I forget a little box to check ? mental ray is full of little boxes to tick...

Default blending with mia and car paint

how? mix8layer? I can't install them due to my company.

In the car paint help it says that the car paint phenom should be used as a surface shader in a material. So I go to my shading group in maya and apply it to the surface material of the mia material, but nothing happens. Am I reading into this too much? Do I just plop the shader onto my object?

Will mental ray ever make an "official" layered shader?

Thanks,

Scott
