View Full Version : Metallic WWII aircraft shader

Hi !

I wanted to create a good metal shader like the one on metal sheets on the good old WWII planes. Newbie to MR, I tried the new Arch And Design material, which seemed to be the simplest.

Have U got any other idea in previous MR shaders lib ? My specular is too "plastic-like", whatever parameter I've tryed...

I wanted something that you can see here, on the blue aircraft near the end, which makes a turn, and we see it from the top :

Thanks !

Put a noise map in the "glossiness" slot, and adjust the dark and light colors of the noise to get a "varied" glossiness across the aircraft... it'll look like smudges/fingerprints/etc.

Also, don't do *too much* specular, if you are using Arch&Design, go down to the BRDF rollout and perhaps turn *down* the "0 degree reflectivity" lower, to 0.1 or less.

But I think the main 'trick' is in varying the specularity. Also, adding a bump map helps (the plane in question in the video seemed fairly 'wobbly' surfaced)

That looks to me to be a glare from a reflection. It could be a specular effect of the shader, but not likely. The plane could be rendered inside a HDRI sphere of a sky.

To add to Zap's & Mathew's tips, you may want to use the "highlights & FG only" mode of the A&D material...especially if you need a real diffused highlight.

I made an example render using only the highlight & FG mode:

I screwed up by having too much specular on the wing material (I should've turned the 0 deg reflectivity down like Zap mentioned). :(

the surface not only the shader, try to create a real texture and also specular map, bump map, that will help all
