hi :
i have some basic question about the shading and texturing
of mental ray .
once i havse setup up my lighting and reding effect
and jump to material .
1. i all my model use native maya shader still could get
those relasitic render effect with mental ray?
2. maya shader and texture should make some chage to
do with mental ray?
3. should polygon have to setup tesellation befure render wigh mental ray?
4. what is the main difference bewteen using many shader
and mr shader while rendered with mental ray ?

heres my knowledge.

1. Yes even using maya shaders you can get those same effects. Mental ray has it's own shaders of the same ones you find in maya. you'll find using them your scene might render out faster.
2. depends on the textures. If you are using proc ones from maya some wont work in mental ray so check to see when you render if the textures work right. Other then that a file texture in maya is good enough for mental ray. I'm not an expert but most of the nodes in maya will work with mental ray. Make sure you use a file type mental ray likes.

3. ah you mean nurbs and sub-d right? Yes you might want to set up tessalation for mental ray. oftem times when i render out a scene with that geometry and it's taking a long time to render it's from geometry not shaders and lighting so check tessalation in mental ray.

4. Maya and mental ray shaders. not the expert but speed and functionality. Theres alot of custom shaders out there for mental ray. there are also some for maya. main difference i'd say is that mental ray shaders and piped for mental ray in maya they have to be translated which takes some processing. plus mental ray you can fine tune the render depending on your setup within mr. that and mental rays shaders if you look don't have all the same attributes with in each shader as mayas do which means you have to setup networks in mental ray to get things like transperancy or bump mapping refractions and so on. if you play with mental ray the differences become pretty apparant

thank you for kindly respond my question, so
if my model just created from polygon just polygon models
so i need not have to set the tessellation setps ?
once the model is nurbs or subd them i have to set the
tellelation for them?

No, you dan't have to, this is optional, and mostly used only if a displacement mapping is needed, otherwise mental ray handles the three types of surfaces very well.
