I've come across this post a made a few years ago and have tried to reciprocate what is going on to no avail

Any time I put a mental ray node into the base/tip color/ambient slots I get nothing but plain colors. No occlusion is happening on the hairs, and I cannot seem to get a dgs shader to work on my hairs.
From the post it makes it seem as if you just drag and drop mental ray nodes right on the the tip/base slots and they should work. That's what I've done so there must be something I am doing wrong. I.E. connections made with the fur description? Fur Render settings? Mental ray render settings?
