Has anyone had any success in doing this? It can be done in Maya as in this tutorial

http://www.cgarena.com/freestuff/tutorials/maya/shadertips/index2.html

Although I've been trying to set this up in 3dsmax 9 and not having any real results.

I must be missing a something...

thanx

The parti volume shader is probably one of the trickiest shaders to setup. Mentalray's documentation doesn't help all that much either.

I've had some success trying out that tutorial, and this is what I came up with:

First off the shader is sensitive to scale. I have my geosphere set to 10 units. You have to work your height value around to something that works out to the scale of your sphere. When you plug a noise map into the height scale put in a mix curve to give it some sharpness and pump the height value up to a high number like 80-100 until you see results, some tweaking is involved. I don't like playing with the extinction value for my brightness values, instead I use the r value which kinda controls the intensity of the scattering. Again I use a mix curve to define my flamey stuff and I have my output set to around 8.5, maybe higher or lower depending on the look you want. Most of my noise values are around a 10-15 size scale, it's rather large but I'm a sucker for big bulky flames.

This is the rest of my setup:

Hope thats helpful

EDIT: Oh and about the light, it's just an omni, and I'm using mentalray shadow maps, raytracing gives you noisy scattering and I have my map set to 1024, 16 samples, but it can be higher than that. You want to have really high quality shadows or the scattering comes out like arse ;)

I'm glad to see someone was able to make this work with objects not just volume light fx. I'll have to give this another shot with your post I should be able to do it.

thanks
