Mental not has any displacement modif, but in mental ray coenction you can connect the mental-ray specific displacement shaders, with very nice results, spacialy with the great 3d displacement, with this shader you can choose the displacement orientation and much more :D
If you use mudbox, here´s a great tut: http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_education/mudbox_max/mudbox_max.htm
hi:)
check out jeff pattons website there is a good tutorial for displacement w/ mr
hope it helps

MR is able to make great displacemt. Don't give up yet. Jeff has some good starters to see how you set-up these things. You will have to experiment with it cause MR is hard to control with displacement. You will easily get a memory error.

yes!MR crash very often with highly detailed maps and non very extreme settings ...so experiment to find the best settings for your scene

hi
when you use highresolution displacement and mr ist crash, optimize your parameters. It is not helpful, you must down the displacement solution:
large BSP, size 40, depth 80

In the renderer tab of the renderdialogue you can set the pixels (I allways do this by view and set it to 0,3/0,2). Don't use to much memory with large displacement, than MR will crash. And set the memory (1 or 4K is sufficiant) and allways set the displacement length to 1cm more than the real displacemt is in you material.
hi
thanks for those infos guys.
Ummm... I think it is much better if you should have a tutorial here about displacement topics.
Its only a suggestion:) I hope I didnt disturb much of your time
sorry for my english:o

Just an example. All materials are displacement.

Edge Length: 0,1
Smoothing: unchecked
Max. Subdiv.: 4k
A/A:1/4
Rendertime: 00:06:00 (h:m:s) (Only uses 2 of the 4 threads... VIZ-issue)
hi,
thanks a lot for the effort and sharing with us schjaack
what tool did u use, 3d displacement or height map displacement?
Im really curious with the roof tile, I've never seen that before, how did u do that?
could u show us some setup, I want to learn that too
thanks in advance:)

Great results. I really like the roof tiles. What bitmap did you use?

Nisus, here is a meterial for the bricks, grass, and rooftiles. Rooftilemap is added. I got this from a user from another forum, Matt English.
Materials.zip (http://cubicdesign.nl/vizdepot/displacement-mats.zip)
Also an example for displacement. Right is material setting and left the render setting.

If yall need some of the models to be controlled separately within the displacements, then you can just right click the model then click properties. In the property dialog, click mental ray tab and then at the very bottom is the displacement controller.
You can use that instead of using the displacement controller in the properties dialog instead of render dialog.
Let me know if yall don't understand that clearly.
