Okay here's something really dumb I discovered.
I've been using mr_sky and mr_sun together in production with great success.
I started to toy around with them in my own time.
I was lighting a scene without the mr_sun and mr_sky, now I thought I could just delete mr_sun and just use the mr_physical_sky to light the scene (like the typical overcast day).
I soon realised final gather stopped working, I found this quite annoying. Then I discovered I had to use the mr_sky light from the create lights panel to use the mr_sky without mr_sun.
Ohh yes I felt stupid, anyway anyone else you comes across this ,I hope this helps :)

Also I'm trying to get the nightime swatch to work in mr_physical_sky. Is the only way to get it to work is by using mr_sun and make the time midnight ? really late at night, etc..

one more question,
With Logarithmic Exposure, to make a shot brighter, say for an interior, does everyone mainly use the brightness or mid tones or a combination of both ?

Hi:)

For me I always use Logarithmic exposure control when operating with A&D materials as recommended in max reference
to render it realistically. But I havent tried yet to use both the brightness and midtones. Maybe I'll just try it also if it works good.

sorry for my english:)

Hi guys,
What kind of settings do you use for a nighttime shot ?
I'm using mr_sky
mr_sky intensity to 0.005
mia_exposure_simple
Ped 0.0
gain 1.0
knee 0.5
comp 0.5
gamma 1.8

This seems to be the only way I can get the inside lights nice and bright for a night time shot and the sky blue with out blowing it out.

brightness > I use only brightness

For a night shot, i use EXACTLY the same parameters as for a daylight image except for two:
- brightness = 25 (instead of 65 for daytime)
- exterior daylight checkbox = OFF (instead of on)

One can turn of the MR_Sun (don't delete it, just de-check the checkbox), but it's not necessary as long as you keep the time at night...

Thanks Nisus,
So turning off the mr_sun is the same as just using mr_sky.

Is turning off exterior daylight in Log exposure similar
to adjusting the physical scale ?
I did read turning off exterior daylight was not physically acurate.

Do you prefer to use logarithimic than mia_exposure ?

cheers

Hi Bullseye,

I've never tried the mia_exposure yet. From the description I've seen, I looks rather tedious to setup. I prefer good-old-simple-straight-on-target logaritmic exposure (for now).
Another good way is the openexr. Easy to setup (especially in PSCS3 as an application layer)...

Hi Nisus,
mia_exposure is simple to setup, just drop it in the lens shader, change the settings to something like this.
The gain has the most control as its like the brightness
spinner in Log Exp.
Ped 0.0
gain 1.0
knee 0.5
comp 0.5
gamma 1.8

if i have to use the logarithmic exp control anyway, then why use the mia_exp control? isn't it making the whole thing more complicated? i'd prefer to use only one exp control.

Yes and no.

The results of a cleaner render, better colour and contrast are worth the little extra work involved in settling up the shader.

Once you get to know the settings they are quite quick to set up.

I can't seem to get rid of the mia physical sky dome rendering in the background. I check "use background" on a pc box and it goes away...but when I'm rendering on a linux box it has no effect. Is there anyway to manually disconnect this dome so I can render w/ mia physical sky against a black background?
