View Full Version : How do I simulate a magnifying glass/glass ball gathering lightrays using caustics?

I've done a tutorial on this and I can't get it to work. It is a pdf of a lecture held at siggraph some years ago, including stuff on participating media, a custom made photon collector object, utilizing the transmat material as well as some other stuff. Luckily the guy included the final file for download. I still couldn't get the render to look right. Could somebody take a few minutes to explain how to achive the effect displayed in the image I've included. In other words how to simulate lightrays going through a glass ball, showing the rays picking up particles in the air

PS: If it makes no difference I would prefer if you showed me how to do it using Mental Ray for Maya.
