I'm watching your pic on a non-calibrated screen, but yes it appears too dark for me. ;)
But i couldn't say if it's due to a low light intensity or an exposure control that needs to be set better.
Except that, nice job, I like it.
Just the little glass table that seems to cast not enough shadows on the floor. ;)

I'm using 3 area light at the windows and the physical sun of MR 3.5.
but I'm trying to get a better lighting with the francesca luce tonemapper.
Still trying ;)
cheers

hi,:)
have u tried to adjust ur gi multipier?
and one thing is ur center table is floating, ao really gives detail
on that
I hope it helps:)
or render floating point and do your tonemapping in photoshop cs2/cs3.
i just finished helping on an architectural visualisation project, getting all my exposure settings done post-render was a massive timesaver, and let us get 'correct to the eye' results quickly and easily.

When using an area, just set one area in front of the whole window. Set the cd value to 5000-10000 (Somewhere in between) and don't use the sun/sky system when using a Area light. Than use a MR Area Spot. Or use the Sun/Sky or use a Area/Spot.

i recently encountered this case, trying to light an indoor with a Daylight and adding an Aera Light as an improvement of light. But I didn't reach the result I wanted and used instead a spotlight.
Can you explain why an aera used with a Sun/Sky system doesn't seem to work please?

It does work, only problem is that u use a sky you don't need. This way you bucket will be slow (as your signature sayes :p). It's kinda double.
Area is used for the ambien light, just as the sky, so you have to choose between them. Since I seen different scenes and experimented with both, I suggest to use the area with the MR Area Spot to get the best result within a reasonable time. It's also more easy to control.

I often use an area light with the sun/sky because the sky gives me beautiful and realistic blue colored areas near the windows and the sky environment gets reflected by objects near windows.
Also the good area shadows and the color of the sun is a befit of this method.
hi:)
U can also try one of my improved method for interior scene. Just try to play the values of free area intensity, log. exposure, and global lighting - tint, and add mr area spot for the sun or direct light whatever u want.
here my sample max scene image

Yes, I agree with you Schjaak, this a more easy and tweakable lighting. But I agree too with F3LIC3, the produced light is very nice (I use this method for the 1st time for a zen living-room I posted here).
Thanks for your answers. ;)

I would set the tint level to 1 to keep everything in balance (materials and stuff) and set the cd value to 10000 (2.5 times the value you have now). You can also play around with the bounces by increasing the values in the FG rollout and GI (when using that) rollout.

that method can do also, actually there are many ways or techniques you can do for a scene to render effectively which the artist prefers the best:D
