Create a file in My Documents\maya\X.0\prefs name it maya.rayhosts
and just host name or IP there in a simple list
restart maya hit render
be happy :)
can you write an example please?
i understanded something like this:
192.168.0.2
192.168.0.3
192.168.0.3
etc.
where every IP is slave machine's IP
really thank you

Hi,
You need to install Maya on another computer, and then add that computers name or IP address to the rayhost file.
You do not need to active the new installed Maya. The install software will create a MR service that runs in the background on that computer.
Next time your in Maya and render with MR. The output window should list a statement that it has connect to the computers listed in the ray host files.
For better performance make sure your textures are stored in a shared folder that both computers can accesses. Else, MR will have to send the textures over the network itself.

yeah, u can also use the machine namelike this
mrhost01:7103
mrhost02:7103
etc, and I forgot to mention the 7103 part of the line, this is the port so is important
ok, just to reassume...
what have i got to do?
i understanded this:
1 - install maya on master machine
2 - install mr satellite on slave machines
3 - create a txt file in my document folder and rename it in maya.rayhost changing file name and extension
4 - write in this file:
mrhost01:7103 192.168.0.2 (for the first slave)
mrhost02:7103 192.168.0.3 (for the first slave)
etc.
where every IP is slave machine's IP
is this right???
can u explain me better:)
ok i did it...
but there's a little problem...
network render is slower than single machine render

ok i did it...
How did you do it?
I tried but it doens't work, I get this error when rendering:
could not connect to host: port 192.168.171.238:7103 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.
i am using maya 8.5
This is for windows:
1. Install Maya 8.5 on slave machine.
2. Install Mental ray satellite on slave machine.
3. Make maya.rayhosts file. This file should be in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\maya\8.5\prefs
File should look like this
slavemachinename:7106
For maya complete you can have 2 extra CPU's as slaves.
For maya unlimited you can have 8 extra CPU's as slaves.
If you have dual machines with 2 CPU's:
1 extra machine for complete, 4 extra for unlimited.
Instead of name it could be the ip number.
If you open cmd prompt
with START-> RUN, type cmd, opens the console, type:
> ping slavemachinename
If it finds it then you can just use this name, otherwise use ip address. If you type
> ping ipaddressnumber
it still should find your machine, otherwise it's not gonna work.
4. The machines must have SAME USER with administrator privileges and same password.
Until we done that, we couldn't get it to work.
So under windows you have to create new user, give it admin privileges, so to have same user and same password on both master and slave machines.
On your slave machine you should have following process running:
raysat85server
This is slave machine ready for you to send stuff for it to render!
5. To render on slave machine but not on your master machine use command line with:
-r mr -rnm 1
This should work with smedge and similar...
If you have -r file and -rnm 1 this would not work.
In smedge3 you have to change maya.ini file under modules directory in order to fix this and delete -r file, but downside is that you have to type it yourself from there on...
I hope this is enough...
6. Check the speed of your network. It should nowadays be 1GB. If it's not and should be check that your router supports this speed, and that your cables are right class. Testing the network connection will tell you where the problem lies.
This is basic setup, and I wonder if someone has more advanced tips, we just started using it...
I wish whole setup was a bit more flexible...
Let me know if I said something wrong...
