Is there any way to do something similar to Vray when we select object properties and activate Matte object? Enabling the object to catch shadows, reflections and only that appears in the alpha?!??! This is driving me nuts! Thanks in advance.

unfortunately 3ds max matte/shadow dosen't work with mental ray FG Shadow, there is a way to fake this.. it's complicated to say in english hope my scene will help you..

you can apply any material to the ground plane.. and dosen't need the composting thing..:)

hi,

you use a domlight, for faking the FG-Shadow, but you can use the irradiance matte Shader, for real FG-Shaodw. ;)

or another trick faking fg-shadow with ambient occlusion: http://forum.german-mentalray-wiki.info/viewtopic.php?t=20

hi,

For a matte/shadow I use a blend material with a 'fall off - light / shadow'-mask to get a mixture between a transparant material and an ideal diffuse...

Pitty the regular matte/shadow doesn't work...
