For skin i wanted to add SSS fast skin + displacement, because of the displacement, but for some reason It doesn't work. I tried both Extrude map, and direction map and tried to pump up the strength but I get no effect no matter what. Please help me with a tutorial or an explanation. Do I have to modify some settings in rendering? or do I need a particular thing done?

Please help me! I prefer asking for help than bragging about how I know everything. :)

Dowload this test scene, is simple, but maybe is interesting for you. Is important when you use this type of shders the units that you´re using, take a look at the file and I hope you serve something.

cheers

first make sure the "displacement" checkbox is checked in the common render setup settings (just above where you set your output file).

also, if your sss + displace material is nested within a multi-sub material, you'll need to take an extra step to "enable" displacement: at least one of the IDs of the multi-sub material must be assigned a "mental ray" type material with a displacement texture map in its displacement slot (can be either "3D displacement or "height field").

Thanks, I checked and displacement is checked, also I'm not using a multi-sub, but it still doesn't work... In the SSS + displacement material, first I have Scatter group (Witch is set to A), then Lightmap size (In % of render size) (It's set to 50), then Number of samples (128) and then displacement and bump. In displacement there is a map called 3D Displacement (3dsMax) and when I go inside of it I can see "object independant" (It's checked), Displacement Length, Extrusion Strength, Extrusion map, Direction strenght and Direction map. I tried to put my ZBRUSH exported displacement map in both Extrusion map and Direction map, and together and tried to pump up strenght, and lenght and everything and it makes no difference on the model and render, nothing changes. I know it's really confusing...

in the "3D Displacement" map, apply your displacement texture only to the extrusion map slot. leave direction strength at 0 and the direction map blank. control displacement intensity with "displacement length" parameter.

in your mental ray renderer settings make sure "Max Displace" and "max subdivs" (under "Shadows & Displacement" rollout) are high enough to get the result you're looking for.

you might also try exporting your displacement map as a different format. (zbrush has lots of options for bitdepth). also double check that your displacement texture is applied to the correct UV channel and that the map displace as you expect it to on the model in the viewport.
