Anyone any idea what causes these artefacts?

Ni Nisus, weird, it looks like a memory problem, i got something like this (http://www.mymentalray.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1429) some time ago. I changed all to a white Mia_material and it kept showing the artifacts, but using a simple lambert didnt, in the end it turned out it was a maya problem and i needed the service pack.
have you tried opening the file in a previous version?
or exporting the model and opening it again?
please let us know what was it and how did you solve it, looks like the kind of things you stumble upon when you are on a tight deadline.

A good friend told me there must be a broken shader in the scene and that the shader returns insane high level FG values. Since I use no filtering on the FG solutions, it seems very probable that the values do not connect well... got to find that shader now...

I just got the same problem today (and the background was rendered black also) and I tried changing the Camera Correction modifier so it's not perfectly straight and that worked. Do you have a CC modifier?
