Hi there, I have a normal light setup, directional light plus a skylight, FG enabled. Now, I have a bitmap in my environment slot to have reflections but the thing is I dont want it to appear in the image because of post-production issues (Pre-multiplying the image with black mainly). I've tryied the sphere around the scene with the bitmap, and turning off the bitmap in the environment slot, but the thing is that the sphere blocks my skylight, and the lighting on the scene becomes different... I'm am missing something? Any help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

hi,
the sphere is the right way. you must only use a raytype for your sphere. I am use the ctrl_rays shader.
make a mr-material und take the ctrl_rays in the surface slot. The ctrl_rays shader have different options.
-> Eye = your background picture
-> Reflection,Refraction,Transparans = picture, color what you want
-> fg = for example the mr_physical_sky or what you want. So you donīt need the skylight from MAX ;)
look here for shader: http://www.mymentalray.com/mymr_shaders/shaders-raycontrol.htm

How can we tell which shaders work with Max ? Most appear to
be for Maya.

hi,
the most shader works for max & maya & xsi. You need only the special MI-File for Max. For most shaders can you download this Mi-File on www.maxplugins.de. Some shader, there are use the frame buffer or label_identity, work at this time not this Max, for example the ctrl_buffers or the glare (lume) shader. :(

How can we tell which shaders work with Max ?
Hi Mike,
the mental ray section at www.maxplugins.de only contains shaders that I have tested in Max. If they don't work properly I don't put them in the database. I have also written Max .mi files for a lot of them, which can also be downloaded there.

the glare (lume) shader
Glares works for max, you just have to remove 'hidden' in the 'lume.me'-file.

How about for Max 64 bits? Seems that people are only developing for 32 bits... I quite dont understand that... for me working in 64 bit is already a must. Anyone know's the difference between developing or porting shaders for Max 32 bit and Max 64 bit? Thanks in advance and thanks for the explanation on the environment stuff :)

Glares works for max, you just have to remove 'hidden' in the 'lume.me'-file.
He's not saying that it didn't work, he's only saying parts of it do not work with 3dsmax. Like the "label_identity" aka "tag" option which would allow one to assign the glare to specific objects.

Well, that's the whole idea: to be able to understand the german MR-forums ,-)

Actually I was refering to the shaders on this site. Which ones
work with Max ? The "ctl_" shaders look very usefull. Thanks for the info on maxplugins.de. I havent been there in along time.

Mike
In the sphere objects properties, you can off everything except visible to camera and visible to reflections, Max will ignore everything but the reflections emitting from the sphere, it should work.
