S.O.S. Rendering large images for print in Mental Ray for Maya 8

I have gone through threads on this topic, in the Cgsociety forum especially this one:

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=87&t=171211&highlight=images+large

It seems that the best solution is in rendering separate regions of the overall image.

I have tried to apply what is written in the threads regarding this topic, but of no avail. In these threads the people contributing from their experience unfortunately write in a laconic manner that is intended for Maya users experienced in MEL Scripting.
I would be much obliged if someone could please write a step by step procedure for Maya 8 users that are unfamiliar with MEL Scripting, (yet are at least able to copy the proper commands and paste them in the right place).

When trying to write the following command (trying to render a region of 400 square pixels):
Render –r mr –reg 0 400 0 400 myfile.mb
I receive the following error message:
Error: -r invalid flag

Eagerly waiting for an answer, all the best,

Contrabass.
