i have a load of 2d fish on cards and want a clean zdepth pass from mental ray. so mr can see through the cards i have setup a mr card opacity shader. the problem is when i render it in my scene it is still picking up the cards slightly. I think its a bug because i have gotten it to work perfectly before. has anyone seen this before? any help would be great. i am using maxes volume lights in the effects panel.the last time this happened i just turned off the volume lights and rendered them separately.this worked fine until i added more cards???

try increasing your overall and refraction raydepth to something like 6-10..

Hm,nope gimik, i think it has nothing to do with any rays here,it just won't use it.Blue12,you mean, you're trying to mask areas with a fish and get rid of the rest of a card, right?I'm not a max user, but i've faced with such a problems,so do other MR users i think.

although his problem may not be related to the issue, there can be refraction issues with cutouts.

you'd think they would have nothing to do with refraction rays, but if the raydepth is too low you will see alpha/transparency issues with cutouts that are layered over eachother.

(not sure if this is a max only issue or not.)

*edit* looking at the image again, is it possible your cutout image is not clamped to black for areas you want transparent? maybe there is a slight amount of grey? try adjusting the map in photoshop to ensure any barely grey values are indeed black.
