Hi guys,

I'm looking for a good snow shader or material for MR. Should have some subsurface effects (but not required), and some glitter as well.

Anyone know of any tutorials or material files?

Thanks,

Hi again,

I also need something to do frost. The kind of frost that covers objects slightly but you can still see the objects under it.

Hi Mathew,

I've used the SSS fast skin shader before for some snow. Here's an example where I mixed in some sparkles using the flakes option on the carpaint shader.

If it looks like something you'd be interested in using or exploring, let me know.

Thanks Jeff,

That looks very nice. Can you share the scene file?

Are you already familiar with the process of using lightmaps with the SSS fast skin shader? If not, I'll need to write up a quick blurb about that.

I know that lightmaps are used to quickly calculate the sub surface scattering, but it's handled automatically in Max.

Are you doing something special with the lightmaps?

In order to mix the SSS material with another material, you have to make some quick edits to the subsurface.mi file in order to use the lightmap option.

I have a thread at CGtalk on using the SSS material in a blend map by using lightmaps, as such, I didn't know if you were already familiar with the process, if so I will just send you the file. If not, I'll need to pull some info together on the edits & lightmap process.

Just send me the Max file, and the .mi file. I'll have no problem figuring it out.

I think I know what your talking about.

My file:

I can't provide my subsurface.mi file. Just disable the hidden tags on the lightmap options of your subsurface.mi file.
