Hi folks
aaaahhh, the complexities of mental ray, so reassuring.....not,
I am trying, I mean really trying to build a photorealistic"ish" ice shader, I have tried the physical sss shader and the fast one too, its not really working, so has any one got a clue, idea, tutorial, etc
many thanks

In my experience with Ice it's really not that necessary to use sss... check out this tutorial... very good.

Hi 3d geek
Many thanks for replying, the kind of ice I wish to replicate is the thick polar ice type, you know white then blue and striation through out , but that said, "the others render" (bless him), are spankingly good, so I might just have a little go.
where are you based ? I am in the UK

Peter Shipkov has a pretty nice looking ice preset in the Overburn pack...

Here is something i cooked up with fast SSS shader. I rendered 2 images, the first with a total SSS shader to give the more opaque, deep frozen ice and the second a more typical clear ice using Lglass. In PS i comped the 2 layers and added a third specular only layer to get the effect seen here. As to the settings I used well I am not totally sure now but I remember it being relatively easy to set up the SSS layer and mainly about adjusting the colour of the scattering effect. The placing of the lights really was the determining factor for the look of it in the end.
