hi all ^^
do you think that mrprim for hair are really so good?
i've been trying to achieve some good result(with the standard hair & fur of max), but nothing really good
here are 2 pics, of a test, one with mrprim e the other with geometry, and in the one with mrprim there are a lot of fragmented hair, and take very much to render(33:43 min), the other with geometry has no artifact, and take less to render(6:09 min)
the scene is the same, same shader, same settings
so, someone can tell me if there are other things that i don't know, that can take one to use mrprim instead of geometry(well, maybe this metod take more ram ^^)
considering that with geometry, you can set a gradient too, to map the hair from the root to the tip, i don't undestand why in the insustry the mrprim are so used
maybe the maya and softimage mrprim are different and take less to render???:confused:
i'd really like to have you opinion on this, so please, share them ^_^

what for a hair shader do you. Have try the muhair shader !?

i've tried the bo_fast shader for hair, but it takes very long to render, so i put it apart
in the test i've used an arch&design shader, with anisotropy set to 0.25, fast interpolate, and highlights+FG only, and in this way it render really more faster
do you think it's a problem of shader???
the segmented hair seems to be more a render problem, so i don't know if it's a shader problem:confused:
other thing to say, is that the tip thick is set to 4, i can't set it to 0 because the fragmented hair rate rise more, so maybe it's a problem of hair thick
i've tried to rise the mr voxel resolution too, from 5 to 10, but nothing changed

try the muhair shader, this much better es my bo_hair shader.
first: you can download muhair on www.maxplugins.de
second: try a for anti-alaising the Gaus Filter

i've gone to maxplugins.de but the link to the shader is broken, the only link that works is that of the site, but there's only a version for XSI there, not for max T_T
EDIT: maybe i've fount it here in shader section, i've copied the .mi file in the autoload directory, and it appear in the material list of the material editor, but at render time it give me an error saying that muhHair can't be found "PHEN 0.3 error 051011: shader "muhHair" not found"
have i got to do something else???
PS:i'm using max 9

sorry, but it don't works T_T
maybe i lost some passage, i only copied the muhHair.mi in the autoload directory of mental ray, is there something else to do???:confused:
EDIT:maybe i've found the way, i've copied the .mi file in the autoload\include and the .dll from the softimage file in the autoload\shader folder, is that right???

is correct....
for installing shader in to max:
a) MI-File copied in to autoload/include directory
b) DLL File copied in to autoload/shaders diectory
thats it....
is that not work, pleace try the muhair shader version from the pixero page. This paket is for max and maya.
important !!! the right AA value is important for the rendering quality. I use the gauss filter. Is the AA-Filter sharper have you more problems. Sorry for my english!!!

i've tried with other settings of AA, and with high samples the fragmented hair seems to disappear

I've fixed the link, but if no-one lets me know when something is broken, it will never get fixed. Luckily I read this thread, otherwise it would still be broken.
