HI,

I am just getting started in mentalray for maya and have discovered the very cool Architectural and design shader.

I am trying to put some text on a brushed metal surface. Normally I would do this with a simple tiff with an alpha channel pluged into a layered shader. Unfortunatly Maya will not let me plug the mia_material or dialectric material into a maya layered shader.

Can anyone give me a detailed runthrough of how I would setup a layered shader in mental ray for maya?

Many thanks

Tim

Default mib_color_mix shader is pretty easy to use for this purpose. You can plug your alpha into Weight parameter of your layer. In Maya8.0 they even have a more intuitive template as they named all the modes properly (in previous versions there were just numbers and one had to go through the docs to find out what mode is what ;) )

....or you can other use some custom shaders like mix8layer by francesca or some other color mixing shaders by Pixero...
