Hi,
I wanted to ask how to get that darn car paint shader to output me them render-passes.
Right now I have a car paint (shader not phenom) set up in 4 different layers in a composite map inside the surface shader of a mental-ray material.
Each of these guys only has one set of features enables, say for example the base layer has only the
diffuse coloring thinges turned to on and the rest are blacked out.
I am usning the mr labeled element Render element but am getting NIL for a render out put.
Please see the attached (max 2009)file for what I mean
Thanks in advance,

okay got it....And it works like a wonder
Thanks a lot...
I downloaded the car paint demo-scene file, I had to unlock the mi_metallic_paint shader ... but i cant get the max_mrStoreElements to show up in my material editor.
How do I get the max_mrStroeElements to show up in my material editor so that I can use it later more easily

d/l the test scene HotChip posted and see how he put it together.
The car paint material doesn't show up with the render elements because it is not an A&D or ProMaterials material.
However, the car paint material is just a phenomenon. It is a "container" for 3 shaders (which are themselves hidden by default)
If you unlock those shaders, you can assemble them into an A&D or ProMaterials material, and will then work with Render Elements.
I believe the shaders are:
Car Paint Shader(mi)
mi_bump_flakes(mi)
mi_metallic_paint(mi)
and they can be found in the "paint.mi" file in the shaders_standard directory of mental ray.
HotChip's file should show you how it all gets put together and how to set up the render elements.

Thats crazy talk with the 140 and 280.. Especially if your just scuffing it up to accept the paint. I used 180 on the places I had to use filler, but if you were just spraying the car, just scuff it all up with 500 or 600.

It can be found in 3dsmaxshaders.mi file, just put an # before the "hidden" in the gui declaration.
