Volumetric lighting problems

Hi all, I've been trying for sometime now to get my volumetric lighting to work.

What I'm attempting to do is create an engine flare for the engines of my Spaceship that I'm working on.
I've fiddled around with the volume light in Maya (2008 edition) to get a cone shaped flare out the back of the engine and nothing happens when I render :( Plus I've read a couple of tutorials on the net and they didn't work right either.

So I'm here begging for a master lighting expert to help a poor nub create an engine flare.

If someone could point me in the right direction it'd be fricking fantastic.

mi parti volume perhaps... there are some cool tuts on this site, or do it on post which might be easier

Hi Matthew, I've already tried using the parti_volume with my volume light and either I didn't set it up correctly or it didn't work without something else being added to it.

Yes I'm going for something very similar to that indeed. If you don't mind posting .mb so I can get a grasp on how it's done that would be fantastic.

nope here you go :) all i did was follow the tutorial on this site....i did this in maya 2k9 but have tested the scene in 2k8. for 2k9 the only thing that the tutorial forgets to tell you (or wasn't an issue when it was written). Is that if your camera is inside the volume box you need goto the features tab in render globals and make sure "Auto Volume" is checked. if you don't and you camera is inside of the volume, the volume wont render.
