Great stuff, Brendan. Thank you.

May I know how much I have to invest to have a camera rig like yours to make panoramic HDRI?

sure.... my rig excluding the camera and lens is about $800. Though, there are cheaper alternatives out there. My tripod was around $200 and the VR head was about $600. You will need a remote for your camera also which for a canon can range anywhere from 50-150$. Obviously the most expensive part will be the camera and lens.

my camera is a 20D currently and you can get that for around 700-800$. Right now im shooting with a 20mm sigma lens that runs about 400$ though i would recommend either buying the sigma 12-24 or the cannon 10-22 to shoot with.

hope that helps

Thanks, Brendan. That helps a lot.

I will dig into it more and decide what kind of setup will fit my budget.

Hi, Brendan.

I did a little research on gears for shooting panorama. Since I am still a student, I plan to go for a budget combination.

I plan to buy a Nodal Ninja 3 pano-head (around $200) and then borrow a Canon DSLR (with AEB function) and tripod to just test it out.

If my goal is not for photography but reflection map for image-based lighting in 3D, do you see any problem while using budget combination of pano-head and entry-level DSLR?

Thanks.

sounds like a great setup! my images are 8k x 4k for 2 reasons, A: because it allows someone to use them for print, and B: thats less the half of the actul resolution i can get. I personally have never used the full 8k x 4k.

other then that just make sure you have a steady tripod, and if possible use/purchase a remote for the camera. look forward to seeing any images you create. you should check out http://www.hdrlabs.com

Thanks Brendan for the quick reply.

I did visit hdrlabs frequently and use their sIBL for lighting. They release one set per month for free.
Regarding the remote shutter release, is it possible to just use camera's built-in timer instead? I haven't bought DSLR before, so I am not sure if it usually comes with a remote control or the remote is an expensive accessory to buy separately?

glad to hear you making use of that resource! I got to hear Christian Bloc speak at siggraph in august.... Awesome guy! To answer your question, Yes you can use the built in timer. The only problem with that is time, it takes a lot longer to shoot an environment using the timer. if you goto my site and click on the gallery, go all the way to the bottom. There is a time lapse that i did out my window when i was living in savannah, GA. the video is like 4-5 seconds long and spans only 15minutes! So lighting situations can change very fast! a cloud can move in, a bus can park infront of your key light. the list goes on.

you can fire the camera manually and it works (i have done this several times), just be aware that any slight presure on the camera like that can offset stuff in the distance...

to sum it all up your setup will be fine and for someone just starting im sure it will work out great! as you progress you might get more pickey or you might decide that you don't like doing it. it's good to keep your investment minimal right now.

lastly if it's an EOS series camera the cheapest remote is about 50$ if it's a Rebel i saw on amazon a remote for like 25$

Thanks a lot, Brendan. I surely will give it a shoot once I receive the pano-head and other gears.

lmao hehe, I try to keep it @ 2 identities, a bit schizo i guess, never saw anyone with 6 ID's though ;)

anyway, I can vouch for Crazy8's HDR's, they're sublime, I'll add some examples from his environments:

it'll have to be by a link.. this site still doesn't allow posting of big images, which is very sad.. :( Juliaaaaaaaan !!! :p

they're on my blog:

I dont know much about the Theory of Relativity, but doesnt it state that time travel is not possible to due to the relative nature of time?
