hello.
i use sky portal in an indoor scene ,and i put the sky portal just outside the window. the problem is that i cant see the sky background, all i see is white.
i also use the mr raytype switcher witch i found very good for color bleeding.
i also need a few good tips for photographic exposure control.
and last can anyone tell me where is the mia exposure simple? i search for camera lens shaders but i cant found it.
thanks in advance and sorry for those many questions:)

hey;
I always use my sky-portals in combination with a standard skylight which has an HDR map as a lightsource or the mr_daylight system + I place it in front of the window-geometry to the inside of the house, not the outside.
I got this from a tutorial in which they stayed "place it in FRONT of the window, wether this is on the in or outside, they didn't mention so I guess that remains the "same" - as in: no influence on the lighting process.
I don't know anything about the rayswitcher, so if it's due to this I wouldn't know.
You're using the mr_exposure_control with ?... final gather or global illumination or both together?
when you mean camera lens shaders are you referring to the output shaders? those you can find in the render-engine window @ F10 > renderer > camera effects-tab: Lens / Output / Volume
If you're talking about the camera-background-mapping shaders (productional shaders) the're in the material-shader list @ the material editor.

Hi Dryad
To 'see through' the Portal to the environment outside you can
use the transparency swatch under advanced parameters.
i also use the mr raytype switcher witch i found very good for color bleeding.
That is 'One Way' to handle colour bleed, lots more available though!
Might want to check our New Mini Series dealing with Just this subject!
Edit: for Link - www.mentalboutmax.co.uk/mr/html/MR_Ht.html -
look for Modules 11 & 12

In Max 2009 it is hidden because the vastly superiour MR Photographic
Exposure replaced it! You can unhide it if you want though.

hi drayd,
while i realy dont see a reason to use exposure_simple anymore, heres how it goes:
goto directory: .....3ds max 2009->mentalray->shaders_standard->include and search for gui_mia_exposure_simple, place a # before the hidden command to unhide it....

+1 about mia_exposure_simple, great tool in max9 but now replaced by the mr Photographic Exposure.
What was really nice with mia_exposure_simple is the ability to use a preview image. Luckily, it's possible with the mr Photographic through the great script from hot chip, Photostudio (http://www.mymentalray.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1836&highlight=). (free and pro versions available)

No watermark (and THAT is very cool). The free version didn't receive the last improvments listed by hot chip in the topic.
I use it with all my renders for 2 main advantages :
- a lot of controls are grouped in one window
- it has a preview function (the same from mia_exposure_simple).

I would recommend to see Brian's modules so you can understand how Mental Ray exposure really works, but like small comment I would say that if you are inside of a room with no lights and the only light that you get is from outside you will get a over exposed view of the out side, this happen in real life and Max will try to do the same, what you can do is fix your exposure values or put some lights inside to compensate.
I also need a few good tips for photographic exposure control.
try to look for information in photograph forums or websites the new photographic exposure works just like a real camera.
like rule of thumb I always start from ISO 100, F-top16, speed 30.

here you can find information about mia shader
