I know noone will reply to this, but I write anyway.

My exterior, under MR Sun & Sky flickers like crazy. Here is the set-up:

Sampling : 1-16 Mitchell jitter on
Sun's Shadow Samples: 32
GI : 8million photons ultra smooth
FG : Very High, nth frame

And voila ! MR flickers ! Please admit that this issue has not been solved. Or, at least, solve it in Max2009.

For the beginner out there:

There is no proper documentation, no detailed book (yep, I bought Joep's book-no animation in it). It's all up to two blogs, and a couple of pages of text. Good luck to you mate!

Maybe is your geometry, since you can see in this simple animation that mr sun & sky works well:

With low settings, and no postproduction (glare is mr shader). My AA is the same as you, but shadow samples is set to 8, FG is draft, and I launch 100000 photons.
If you can post the scene (complete or partial) we'll take a look on this.

Regards

Alejandro

Thank you for replying sir. Your movie is nice, but ofcourse there is no complex geometry there that casts linear and repetitive shadows. My model has 7 buildings, 3 of which are wrapped in louvres all around. It is 384 Mb in size.

Is you animation an architectural flythrough, or a light/object motion animation?

For an architectural flythrough w. fixed light, you should write the FG to a file and set that file to *read only* when you render the animation. There should be *no* FG related flicker in this case. Zero.

For moving object animations (think f/x work in films) my recommendation for animation is *low* FG settings with intentional oversmoothing (high interpolation) and then carve out details with the AO in the A&D material.

We use MR for ALL of our exterior animation projects. As a matter of fact, the last project we did had 50 3 story houses, 4 maintanence buildings, a pool, 4 parks with playground equipment, and much more (cars, people, onyx trees, etc). We have never had a problem with flickering FG using the MRSun/Sky. The main reason we switched back to MR from Vray was because of the flickering (and of course the wonderful shaders). There must be something else in your scene that is causing this problem. As already mentioned, posting the file so we can look at it is a good start.

Mike

If you don't have any secondary animation, here's a step-by-step (http://3dsmaxrendering.blogspot.com/2008/04/why-does-my-animation-flicker_02.html) to keep your animations from flickering.

Dear Sirs,

I present my apologies for the language I used previously. I was too much a beginner in mental ray to address anyone in this manner.

Thank you all for your replies (despite my tone of voice).

I have solved the issue of flickering by the methods you have pointed out. Thank you very much.

Respectfully,
HB.
