here is the question im about to ask: in 3ds max, mentalray, we can freeze FG result, which means once we freeze the FG, max will not calculate, and only reuses the previous stored FG result, it suppose to skip the FG calculating step and save much time, like maya does~ but the thing is ,in max, it seems still go through FG calulating when i click freeze FG, and only faster a little bit~ anyone can give me a good explianation?;)

Yes I got the same problem. I think is related to the amount of objects on the scene, it seems that you hide some objects then you calculate the FG for quicker results. Then you unhide everything again and then when you freeze the FG it will re do it because of the new objects on scene. I need a help on a problem I have.

You have to have both switches ticked, read/write and Freeze.
Often I hide the glass in windows whilst calculating FG , freeze and unhide the glass. It really speeds up FG calcs and allows more light into the interior spaces.
If you do it the other way round , ie hide objects after freezing the FG, you will get dark splotches where the object was as there are no FG samples there.
