Thinking I would start me one of these....

As you know the "production" shader library exists in 2008, although by default as "hidden".

I will blog a ton about this, but for now, you will

- find the docs here
(http://www.mentalimages.com/2_1_8_documents/production.pdf)- find the blogging so far here (http://mentalraytips.blogspot.com/2007/10/production-shaders-hidden-treasures-of.html) and here (http://mentalraytips.blogspot.com/2007/10/production-shader-examples.html)

Please feel free to put questions here, although answers may appear on the blog (or not).

Hi,

thanks for starting this thread.

I've just been trying out the mia_env_blur shader, but I'm getting severe flickering.

The camera is moving around, but no more than the example movie you posted on your blog.

I've set the samples to 1000, with no luck.

At first I thought it was down to the map I was using for glossiness in the AD material being set to invert, but I can still see flickering in the render if I turn that off.

It's all rendered on a single PC, so it's not a network render error.

Here's a link to the first animation I did - (Xvid codec)

http://www.stephendgreen.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/teapot_blurred.zip is the scene file.

I'm just a bit stumped as to what might be causing it - the only other thing I'm doing is your suggestion of high IOR values for better metal.

Thanks,

Steve

That looks bizzare, and the only thing I can think of is .. is this max? ... max environment lookup has a very odd pseudo-bug in it's filtering.... try to turn the "blur" multiplier on the max actual max Bitmap to zero and see if this changes... I will try out the scene.... later....

Hi,

yep, it's Max.

I'll try your suggestion and re-render it. I'll post later when it's done.

Cheers,

Steve

Me again,

I tried setting the blur to minimum (.01) and that looks to have fixed the problem.

I didn't realise there was a known problem with it, thanks for the heads up.

Although there's a workaround, is this worth reporting as a bug to Autodesk, since the shaders are unsupported?

Thanks again,

- Steve

Well... it's known to me, and I tried to find it many times but never really been able to.... it's extremely odd, and if you have a scene that reliably reproduces it PLEASE send it to me!

Hi,

does that one I posted the second link to not give you artifacts?

Seems to do it 100% my end.

Thanks,

Steve
